Staff Feature: Meet Our Sport Climbing Programmer

| People & Culture

Ever wondered who the employees featured on our Careers Website are?

Meet Shannon, our dynamic and creative Sport Climbing Programmer! Most days you can find Shannon in the Sports Office designing an array of instructional and non-instructional sport climbing programs, or on the Climbing Wall developing a new and exciting route setting.

Two years ago, Shannon made the move from Prince George to Vancouver where she was able to continue her career in sport programming at the Richmond Olympic Oval’s Climbing Wall. As an avid cyclist, Shannon bikes from Kits to the office every day, in rain or shine! Her favourite thing about working at the Oval are the people – both the staff she works alongside and the climbing community, such as those who recently visited the Oval for the Spring Cling competition run in partnership with SCBC (Sport Climbing BC).

Her best advice for getting into a career in climbing is networking and getting involved in the community. This can be done in many ways, for example, joining online meet-up and Facebook groups (e.g. the Vancouver rock climbing meet-up group). She elaborates that it’s okay to not know everything about climbing when aiming for a career in programming and it’s through these welcoming meet-up groups that you can learn new skills and ultimately become more confident in the sport.

Outside of work, Shannon enjoys skiing and snowboarding, gardening, and is always looking for new biking adventures. Her latest adventure was biking the Gulf Islands including New Castle, Gabriola, Thetis and Salt Spring last summer with friends.

Stay tuned for our next Staff Feature!
