Meet Taryn Overhill!
What brought you to the Oval? What made you choose the Oval?
I used to go to other centres a couple times a week but found them too small and crowded. I would bike ride or walk our family dog around the Oval and I thought I’d check it out. I liked how the Oval had a variety of classes and fitness centre with a wide selection of machines and weights.
What are your favourite activities here and why?
Most of the time I am in the fitness centre, but I try to do yoga (Vinyasa Flow) or spin class when it works with my schedule.
How do you find the Oval different from others? What makes us unique?
It is a great place to train with a large variety of options – I like the fact I don’t have to commit to a set of classes. My membership allows me great flexibility. The staff is very welcoming and easy to talk to and I always leave with a smile on my face. The oval is more than just fitness centre but an opportunity to talk and learn from other likeminded people.
Originally the fitness centre was the biggest draw for me but I have enjoyed taking new classes and most recently playing volleyball on the courts with some friends and family.
Yes and no, I use to work out with my cousin when she had a membership but now I go by myself. With a gym partner I find more motivation, it was always a completion between my cousin and I to see who could do better. Now I use the gym as my stress relief and when I am training I can turn my brain off and forget about life, however there are those days when a friend comes in handy; having said that, I have met some wonderful new people and in doing so has been motivated in other ways.
I see you here every day working out in the weight room area. What machines do you prefer? What’s your P-R?
I do a variety of exercises incorporating free weights and machines, I find the more options I have the more I enjoy the gym. I tend to work muscle groups, Monday – legs, Tuesday – back, etc and unfortunately don’t do enough cardio, although at the Oval – there is a different cardio machine for everyday of the week – I just don’t like that plan. Generally, my daily gym routine revolves around exercises I like doing. I usually give new exercise a chance and if I don’t like it I move on to the next one.
I don’t really train for new Personal Records (PR); I just try to challenge myself in a new way every time.
How has the Oval supported you in your fitness journey? Do you find health & wellness helps you with your career being a paramedic?
By having a wide variety of equipment in the fitness centre and multiple class options I have had the chance to try new things and expand my fitness knowledge. Most of my fitness knowledge has been self taught, but have learned a great deal and been supported by some the wonderful and amazing instructors.
It definitely plays a part being more fit with my job, being able to pick up a patient is always helpful.
I’ve been enjoying the Spin classes which are new for me but I’m interested in trying a rowing class or TRX.
What do you enjoy the most in life?
Working out and eating food!! Seriously – in that order – can’t do one without the other. But I love staying active whether it be biking, hiking or doing the Grouse Grind with my Mom – staying in motion keeps me happy.
Is there anything that you would like to see the Oval to improve?
A pool and hot tub would be a great addition.
