Meet Shane Burr!

What brought you to the Oval? What attracted you the most?

I was as member at Gold’s Gym at the Riverport complex in Richmond.  When Gold’s Gym closed, I went looking for an alternative place to exercise that fit my criteria for an ideal facility:

  1. Close to home (in Richmond)
  2. Offers a variety of fitness choices, including weightlifting, fitness classes, game courts and cardiovascular equipment
  3. Equipment is high quality and the latest technology
  4. The facility fosters an atmosphere of high energy and enjoyment

The Oval fit all of my criteria.  Joining the Oval was a no-brainer.  I was attracted to the Oval being a high quality facility that was also an important venue for the 2010 Olympics.

What are your favourite activities here and why?

I enjoy the weightlifting area and the fitness classes.  Both exercise techniques offer the most reward for achieving my personal fitness goals of a healthy, lean, toned body.

How do you find the Oval different from others? What makes us unique?

The Oval is huge.  It was an important venue from the 2010 Olympics.  The extremely large size, the shape of the building, and the Olympic museum all make it a unique training facility.  I love coming in through the ground level entrance and being greeted by the smiling front desk staff.  I love that I have to climb 2 or 3 flights of stairs to get to my choice of fitness location.  I love that the Oval has a history linking it to the Olympics.  I love the view of the facility from the third floor.  I love the Oval’s proximity to the Fraser River and the ocean.  I love that I can train early in the morning or late at night.  I love that I have so many choices!

How has the Oval supported you in your fitness journey? Have you done Personal Training before?

I believe that a balanced approach to exercise is paramount to a successful fitness journey.  By offering so many choices, I can train my muscles, my cardiovascular system, my game skills, my mind, my soul!

I have both given and received a limited amount of Personal Training in my past. Personal Training has provided me a better understanding of proper technique and safer way to train your body to get to where I need to be.

IMG_4202How often do you climb at the Oval? Do you do anything to keep fit when you’re not at the Oval?

I have climbed the wall at Oval a few times since I have been a member.  I don’t do any serious outdoor rock climbing though. I love to golf, swim, and cycle (especially when it’s nice outdoors).

What are some activities that you would like to try at the Oval?

Golfing, baseball, yoga, ice skating, more wall climbing.

What do you enjoy the most in life?

I enjoy life period.  I enjoy being who I am.  I enjoy giving back to the community whenever I can.  I enjoy meeting people.  I enjoy being with family and friends.  I enjoy a balanced approach to all things in life so that I can have the opportunity to try as many different things as possible to enable a sense of fulfillment.

Being a long time member, you must have seen the Oval grow. Is there anything that you would like to see the Oval improve or have improved on?

The Oval is doing a fantastic job of continually improving. I see it all the time with the addition of innovative equipment, specialty classes, the Olympic museum & theatre and the ROX Shop.  The Oval is continually adding or subtracting classes, equipment and facilities to meet the demands of its clients.  I would like to see the Oval continue with this approach. The one thing I would suggest is more parking availability for members within the parkade, especially when there’s a busy event, other than that, I’m pretty happy at the Oval.
